Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad to sign Benzema on two-year deal MADRID: Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad have reached an agreement with French striker Karim Benzema to sign him on a two-year deal, Saudi state-run Al-Ekhbariya television station reported on Sunday. Benzema is set to join Al-Ittihad as a free agent after Real Madrid said earlier in the day that the 35-year-old would leave the LaLiga club after 14 trophy-laden years. According to Al-Ekhbariya, the president of Saudi champions Al-Ittihad and his deputy were in the Spanish capital “to officially sign” Benzema in a “record transfer with Real Madrid.” The broadcaster said Benzema had agreed a two-year deal with the club, based on the Red Sea shores of the Gulf kingdom. Benzema scored a penalty in his final Madrid game as they drew 1-1 with Athletic Bilbao on Sunday. Saudi Gazette June 5, 2023

Gold slips as firm dollar counters bets for Fed pause BENGALURU: Gold slipped on Monday as the dollar firmed after strong US payrolls data last week, offsetting some of the support for zero-yield bullion from bets that the Federal Reserve may pause rate hikes in June, according to Reuters. Spot gold was down 0.2 percent to $1,944.59 per ounce by 12:46 p.m. Saudi time, close to its lowest level since May 30. US gold futures shed 0.6 percent to $1,958.60. “Gold bulls’ shoulders slumped after yet another red-hot headline nonfarm payroll print fueled a rebound in the dollar,” said Han Tan, chief market analyst at Exinity. “For the immediate term, spot gold is testing its 100-day moving average for support.” Gold dropped more than 1 percent on Friday after data showed the US economy added 339,000 jobs last month, above estimates of 190,000. On Monday, the dollar index was up 0.2 percent, making greenback-priced bullion less affordable for overseas buyers. Benchmark US yields meanwhile were near a one-week high. But providing a floor for bullion prices, the chances of the Fed holding interest rates at their current level at its June 13-14 meeting were pegged at 79.4 percent, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. Non-interest-bearing bullion tends to become less attractive in a high-interest rate environment. “To see higher gold prices, we need to see the Fed getting more dovish, which likely requires weaker economic data,” said UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo. Global shares rose as investors bet on a rate-hike pause and after Saudi Arabia pledged the biggest reduction in its oil output in years. Silver fell 0.4 percent to $23.50 per ounce, platinum rose 0.6 percent to $1,009, and palladium gained 0.3 percent to $1,424.15. Amid prospects for an economic slowdown in Europe and the US, an extended period of softening industrial demand could remove some support for silver prices from factors such as growth in solar cell production, Heraeus said in a note. Price now is: 1940.65

Commercial project worth $1bn in Baghdad
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has signed a contract with Iraq to establish a commercial project worth $1 billion in Baghdad, bolstering the economic ties between the two nations, reported the Iraqi News Agency. Abdulaziz Al-Shammari, the Saudi ambassador to Iraq, revealed that the Kingdom inked a contract with Iraq to develop a massive commercial project near Baghdad International Airport, according to the INA. Dubbed Baghdad Avenue, the project is expected to become the largest shopping mall in Iraq, encompassing coffee shops, restaurants and commercial offices. Additionally, it will house 4,000 apartments and 2,500 villas. “Baghdad Avenue will be a distinguished project and a surprise to all Iraqis. It is the largest mall in Iraq and will include cafes and restaurants with large areas and commercial offices for major Iraqi companies,” Al-Shammari said. “Iraqi and Saudi relations are witnessing a wonderful stage,” he added. Al-Shammari highlighted the recent visit of the King Salman Medical Center’s team to Baghdad, stating that the knowledge exchange between Iraqi and Saudi doctors epitomizes the strong relations between the two countries. “Today, we started reaping its real fruits through the visit of the King Salman Medical Center team to Baghdad, which is the first specialized and practical visit through which we witness the exchange of experiences between the best-skilled doctors in the Kingdom, as well as the best Iraqi doctors, to exchange experiences in fields and subspecialties, which is the first fruit,” he said. Al-Shammari also noted that both countries would soon host meetings featuring economic and cultural discussions. He stated: “The subsequent phase will witness significant momentum in activities occurring between the two nations.” In March, Saudi Public Investment Fund created a new company to invest in various industries across Iraq, with a capital of $3 billion. The Saudi-Iraqi Investment Co. will invest in infrastructure, mining, agriculture, real estate development and financial services, CEO Muteb Al-Shathri said during the Saudi-Iraqi Coordination Council held in the Kingdom. Saudi Arabia’s newest airline Riyadh Air has revealed the design of the livery on its Boeing 787 aircraft. The airline’s planes will be adorned in a purple paint featuring a feather-like design near the rear of the fuselage, and ‘Riyadh Air’ written in both English and Arabic near the front. There will also be two Saudi flags on either side of the cockpit, and the vertical stabilizer at the rear of the aircraft will be painted a light shade of blue featuring the Riyadh Air logo. The design was revealed in a tweet from the airline’s official Twitter account on Sunday. Another tweet from the account of the Riyadh-based aviation media company Aviation World Group showed a clip of one of Riyadh Air’s Boeing 787s taking off. Riyadh Air has ordered 39 Boeing 787 Dreamliners with options for 33 more jets, which was part of a larger order of 121 Dreamliners for Saudi Arabia worth $37 billion – the fifth largest deal in Boeing’s history. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced the launch of Riyadh Air in March. The airline is due to start operating in 2025 and is expected to eventually connect to 100 destinations around the world. According to the official announcement, Riyadh Air is expected to create 200,000 direct and indirect jobs, adding $20 billion to the non-oil economy. The company is wholly-owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) and its CEO is Tony Douglas, who was previously chief executive of Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways. Yasser bin Othman al-Rumayyan, Public Investment Fund Governor, will chair the company’s board of directors. The announcement followed the unveiling of a masterplan in November 2022 for a major new airport in Riyadh, the King Salman International Airport. Arab news June 5, 2023

What to expect as Japan’s PM Kishida begins tour of Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar TOKYO: Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida begins a tour of the Middle East on Sunday — the first by a Japanese leader since the late Shinzo Abe paid a visit in 2020. Kishida will arrive in Saudi Arabia on July 16 before traveling to the UAE and finally Qatar on July 18. The trip is intended to help Japan develop its ties with Gulf Cooperation Council countries and build cooperation in various fields, particularly energy. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar are responsible for more than 80 percent of Japan’s total crude oil imports, with the Kingdom representing 40.68 percent as of the beginning of the year. Amid Russia’s war with Ukraine, which has caused energy supply concerns, Kishida is expected to urge the Arab countries to stabilize the oil market by increasing production. With the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) taking place in the UAE later this year, Kishida also plans to discuss cooperation on cutting greenhouse gas emissions by promoting the transition to hydrogen power. Japan is actively developing greener and renewable energy technologies as it wants to be carbon neutral by 2050. Kishida will also try to promote Japanese know-how, as energy-producing countries also have ambitious green targets. In 2022, Saudi Arabia and Japan signed a memorandum of cooperation in the fields of circular carbon economy, carbon recycling, clean hydrogen, and ammonia fuel. In March, Japanese trading house Marubeni Corp. agreed to study clean hydrogen production in Saudi Arabia together with the Kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund, as Riyadh is looking to add other types of energy sources, including cleaner fuels and renewables, to diversify its economy. Kishida had planned to visit the three countries last year, but his tour was called off after he contracted COVID-19. On July 13, Matsuno Hirokazu, Japan’s chief cabinet secretary, said that the war in Ukraine and other international issues would feature on the agenda during Kishida’s meetings on his Middle East tour.

Protests swell in Tel Aviv for 28th week as anti-government movement vows more ‘days of disruption’ JERUSALEM: Tens of thousands of protesters packed the streets of Tel Aviv on Saturday night, marking the 28th straight week of demonstrations against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan to overhaul the country’s judiciary. Protest leaders promised further “days of disruption” lie ahead. Netanyahu’s government gave initial approval to a key portion of the overhaul earlier this week, breathing new life into the grassroots movement. The bill still needs to be approved in two more votes, expected by the end of the month, before it becomes law. Saturday night protests have become a mainstay of the grassroots movement — but this week’s was larger than usual. In Tel Aviv, protesters unrolled a massive banner reading “SOS.” They threw paint powder into the sky, streaking it pink and orange. “Handmaids” — women dressed in red robes as characters from the dystopian novel and TV series “The Handmaid’s Tale” — once again took to the streets. Their jarring appearance is meant to drive home the notion that, if the overhaul passes, women could be stripped of their rights. On Tuesday, protesters blocked major highways and disrupted operations at the country’s main international airport after Netanyahu’s parliamentary coalition advanced a bill that is part of the overhaul. Organizers said they would hold another “day of disruption” on Tuesday if he continues to move ahead with the plan. The Israeli leader was hospitalized on Saturday for dehydration after suffering a dizzy spell and having spent the previous day in the sun without drinking water. He later released a video from the Tel Aviv hospital, saying he felt good. However, Netanyahu was to spend the night in the hospital, according to his office, and a weekly Cabinet meeting scheduled for Sunday was pushed to Monday. Saturday’s protest in Tel Aviv was joined by others across the country. Protesters brandished lit torches outside Netanyahu’s home in Jerusalem and demonstrated in the coastal cities of Herzliya and Netanya. After more than six months of protests, the movement shows little sign of abating. Israel’s national labor union and its medical association have joined a long list of groups speaking out against the bill. Military reservists, fighter pilots and business leaders have all urged the government to halt the plan. Arnon Bar-David, head of the country’s national labor union, the Histadrut, threatened a possible general strike that could paralyze the country’s economy. “If the situation reaches an extreme, we will intervene and employ our strength,” Bar-David said, calling on Netanyahu to “stop the chaos.” The Histadrut called a general strike in March as the government pushed the judicial overhaul legislation through parliament after weeks of protest. The move shut down large swaths of Israel’s economy and helped contribute to Netanyahu’s decision to suspend the legislation. The Israeli Medical Association, which represents 90 percent of Israeli physicians, joined the Histadrut Friday, voting to “employ all available means, including significant organizational measures” to oppose the reasonableness bill. The law will “devastate the health care system,” the chairman of the association, professor Zion Hagay, said. The mass protests have taken place since Netanyahu’s far-right government presented the overhaul plan in January, days after taking office. The protests led Netanyahu to suspend the overhaul in March, but he decided to revive the plan last month after compromise talks with the political opposition collapsed. The overhaul calls for giving Netanyahu’s allies control over the appointment of judges and giving parliament power to overturn court decisions. The Netanyahu government is the most hard-line ultranationalist and ultra-Orthodox in Israel’s 75-year history. His allies proposed the sweeping changes to the judiciary after the country held its fifth elections in under four years, all of them seen as a referendum on Netanyahu’s fitness to serve as prime minister while on trial for corruption. Critics of the judicial overhaul say it will upset the country’s fragile system of checks and balances and concentrate power in the hands of Netanyahu and his allies. They also say Netanyahu has a conflict of interest because he is on trial for charges of fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes.
