1ـ التثقيف والتأثير في الرأي العام.
2ـ وظيفة الإعلان.
3ـ وظيفة التسلية.
4ـ تسجيل وقائع الحياة لتكون مصدرا للتاريخ.
الصحافة لها رسالة يجب أن تؤديها لمصلحة المجتمع الذي توجد فيه.. ورغم الصعوبات التي تواجهها اليوم إلا أن لها عددا من الميزات يثبت عدم القدرة على الاستغناء عنها:
1ـ توفر الصحافة للقارئ اختيار المطبوعة التي تتفق مع حاجاته وإمكانياته. فهو يختار من الصحف ما يتفق مع رغبته من حيث محتواها أو ثمنها أو حجمها.
كما توفر للقارئ السيطرة على ظروف التعرض لها.فالقارئ يقرا الجريدة أو المجلة في الوقت الذي يختاره, ويتفق مع ظروفه, وفي المكان الذي يناسبه. ويحدد بنفسه متى يبدأ ومتى ينتهي. وإذا سئم القراءة أو طرأ ما يشغله, فيمكنه أن يترك الصحيفة ليقراها في وقت آخر.
كما تنفرد المطبوعة بخاصية سهولة الحفظ والاقتناء, والاحتفاظ بالمعلومات أطول مدة ممكنة. وتتيح للقارئ تكرار القراءة والتفكير بروية فيها يقراه, والعودة له لاحقا للتحقق.
2ـ تمتاز الصحف بسعة الانتشار , حيث توزع في كافة أنحاء البلد الذي تصدر فيه. وغالبا ما توزع في البلدان المجاورة أيضا. كما أسهم البريد العادي والجوي في سرعة إيصال الصحف إلى جميع المناطق. علاوة على أن بعض الصحف تترجم إلى عدة لغات غير لغتها الأصلية. وأصبح في إمكان الصحف أن تقدم لقرائها أخبار اللحظة الأخيرة بسبب تقدم وسائل الطباعة والنقل.
3ـ الصحف سهلة التناول فحجمها صغير وموضوعاتها متعددة, كما أن سعرها الزهيد يتيح للأفراد شرائها بالرغم من انخفاض معيشتهم.
4ـ تساعد الصحافة في محو الأمية الثقافية لدى أنصاف المتعلمين بما تنشره من أفكار ومعلومات ودراسات. ولها أيضا أثر عميق في تحقيق الوحدة الثقافية للأمة ومنها تتوصل إلى الوحدة الاجتماعية.
5ـ تتميز بأنها منشطة للحركة الاقتصادية عن طريق ما ينشر فيها من دراسات وبحوث ولقاءات ذات طابع اقتصادي, كما أنها وسيلة سهلة لتعميم البيانات والقرارات الحكومية.
6ـ تتميز الصحافة بان قارئها بقوم بنفسه بتحصيل فحواها فهو لا يحتاج إلى وسيط لنقل ما فيها من معلومات إلى ذهن القارئ .
7ـ يرى البعض أن من سلبيات المطبوعات أنها تحتاج لجهد كبير أكثر من أي وسلة اتصاليه أخرى, إلا أننا نرى أنها ايجابية ذلك أن جهد القراءة يعتبر كبيرا بالنسبة للكثيرين غير المتدربين على القراءة السريعة الفاحصة, مما يتيح لهم تعلم ذلك والتدرب عليه من خلال قراءتهم اليومية للصحف.
8ـ في البلاد الإسلامية عندما تكون الصحافة في يد مسلمة واعية فإنها يمكنها أن تقوم بدور هام في الدعوة الإسلامية. فهي ميدان خصب لطرح الفكر الإسلامي.
وأخيرا نستنتج بان الصحافة هي مهنة قادرة على تثبيت نفسها وان الصحافة قادرة على أن تكون دوما السلطة الرابعة محتفظة بمكانتها.
