what is plotter
A device that draws pictures on paper based on commands from a computer. Plotters differ from printers in that they draw lines using a pen. As a result, they can produce continuous lines, whereas printers can only simulate lines by printing a closely spaced series of dots. Multicolor plotters use different-colored pens to draw different colors.
In general, plotters are considerably more expensive than printers. They are used in engineering applications where precision is mandatory.

A plotter is a printer that interprets commands from a computer to make line drawings on paper with one or more automated pens. Unlike a regular printer, the plotter can draw continuous point-to-point lines directly from vector graphics files or commands. There are a number of different types of plotters: a drum plotter draws on paper wrapped around a drum which turns to produce one direction of the plot, while the pens move to provide the other direction; a flatbed plotter draws on paper placed on a flat surface; and an electrostatic plotter draws on negatively charged paper with positively charged toner.
Plotters were the first type of printer that could print with color and render graphics and full-size engineering drawings. As a rule, plotters are much more expensive than printers. They are most frequently used for CAE (computer-aided engineering) applications, such as CAD (computer-aided design) and CAM (computer-aided manufacturing). Hewlett-Packard is the leading vendor of plotters worldwide.

plotter is a very versatile tool. It is sometimes confused with a printer, but a plotter uses line drawings to form an image instead of using dots. A common type of plotter is one that uses a pen or pencil, usually held by a mechanical “arm,â€‌ to draw lines on paper as images are typed. It may be a component that is added to a computer system or it may have its own internal computer. It can be used to create layouts, diagrams, specs, and banners.

A plotter may use multiple pens and pencils, which can be easily be changed out in order to create drawings of a different color or drawings that contain more than one color. A plotter is preferred over a printer in many commercial applications, including engineering, because it is far more exact.

Another type of plotter provides the ability to remove pens or pencils and replace them with other tools. This type of plotter is frequently used for commercial sign making. A penknife may be substituted for writing instruments, while pressure sensitive vinyl is frequently substituted for paper. As the sign maker types in letters, numbers, or symbols, the plotter cuts them from vinyl to create lettering for signs, billboards, vehicles, and many other applications. A plotter can generally cut both very tiny and very large images, cutting through the vinyl and leaving the paper backing intact, so the letters can easily be peeled away and applied to a surface.

Another tool that can be used with a plotter instead of writing instruments is a pounce wheel. The pounce wheel moves along the outline of the image creating tiny perforations. A pounce pattern is often used in layouts for large signs or in applications that require hand painting instead of vinyl lettering. Once the paper is perforated, it can be placed on the surface and chalk can be pushed through the tiny holes, creating an outline of the image. The outline can be filled in with paint, or it can be used as a layout for placing vinyl lettering.

What is Plotter Paper?

Plotter paper is a special type of paper used with plotter machines. Plotter machines are printing devices used with computers that are capable of printing vector type graphics. The plotter machine is most widely used by architects and house or building designers in order to create their blueprints. They are also used alongside software programs such as AutoCAD and other drafting and technical drawing programs.

The plotter machine prints using a special pen that moves across plotter paper. There are several types of plotter paper used for printing vector graphics that have been captured by the plotter. This plotter paper is available in different sizes and ****ures. One type of plotter paper is usually sold by the roll. The drawing from the plotter machine is completed on a drum plotter, which the paper is wrapped around.

Another type of plotter paper can be used on a flatbed plotter machine. This plotter paper is placed on the machine's flat service. An electrostatic plotter allows the user to sketch on negatively charged plotter paper that has a positively charged toner.

Plotter paper is available for both inkjet and traditional pen plotters. Bond plotter paper is one such paper that shows this type of versatility. This plotter paper can be used for black and white inkjet plotting, making it ideal for engineering and architectural uses. It is sold on rolls measuring 50 yards (457.2 meters). Some are available with widths from 24 to 36 inches (about 60.96 cm to 91.44 centimeters).

Inkjet vellum plotter paper is usually the preferred choice for printing a large volume of blueprint, because it is capable of printing high quality blueprints. The size of this plotter paper is usually 24 inches by 150 feet (about 60.96 cm by 45.72 meters). For a fraction of the cost of vellum plotter paper, one can get translucent bond plotter paper. Packages of this plotter paper generally weigh 18 pounds (288 ounces) and are available in sheets and in rolls up to 36 inches (91.44 cm) wide.

Gloss presentation plotter paper is used most often with pen plotter machines. This plotter paper is able to capture all of the sharp lines and high contrast of drawings created by the user. The end result is a product that is not only pleasing to the eye, but also clean and professional in appearance.

What is Surface Plotter ?

Surface Plotter is a ****(tm) applet which plots surfaces defined by explicit two-variable mathematical function (i.e: z = f(x,y)). To run this applet, you need a ****-enabled Web Browser, such as Netscape Navigator 2.0 (newer), Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 (newer), or Hot**** Beta (newer).

Calcomp 563 Incremental Plotter Information

This pen plotter was made around 1973 and was used for creating drawings. The plotter was controlled by the host computer with discrete signal lines which allowed the drum to be rotated one step and/or the pen to be moved one step. The host computer has to do all the work of creating lines and characters using single steps of .005, .1 mm or .01 inches depending on model. Mine is the .005 inch model. The PDP-8/E XY8-E plotter control card M842 has a pot to adjust the step rate. For this plotter the maximum is 300 steps per second with .005 inch or .1 mm steps or 200 steps per second with .01 inch steps. This is about 1.5 inches per second. Interfaces for these type of plotters were available on omnibus (8/E) and earlier PDP-8's. This plotter used 30" roll sprocket feed paper.
Later plotters used standard interfaces such as serial and high level commands sets which let you send the end points for lines and **** for the plotter to draw. They could also draw much faster, over 30 inches per second on high end plotters. The pen plotters have pretty much been replaced by plotters which are large inkjet printers. Modern plotters use either sheets of paper or roll paper without sprocket feed holes.
